The Grey Above is the first book of the Osborne Trilogy
When he was eleven years old, Corwin Blake accidentally shot his father on Tiwhiri Hill. Or did he? The accepted version of events is that Corwin and his father were going duck shooting together and Corwin tripped climbing a fence with a loaded shotgun which went off killing his father. However, both his and his father’s shotguns were fired and it may be that the questioning by the police put the accepted version into Corwin’s mind. What follows is an attempt by Corwin throughout the various stages of his life to establish what actually happened and to overcome the violence in his nature that appears to be rooted in this childhood event. After periods spent in Vietnam and France Corwin realises that he has one final thing to resolve and that it can only be done on Tiwhiri Hill. He goes back to New Zealand and the denouement of his story plays out in the pre-dawn mist at the top of the hill.
